EDU  600 - Core Values & Foundations

This course was the first I completed for the M.EdL program.  It set the groundwork for the work I would be doing around school change.  It was interesting that I had developed an idea to restructure literacy instruction in the early grades at that time. The expectation for the course was to look more closely at the systems in place at your site and envision how to make practices more equitable. I now know that the vision I had nearly three years ago important and necessary.

EDU 605 Equity, Diversity & Design Principles

This final product for this course was my initial design and piloting of the Wellness Protocol. In this course, one of the text that has stayed with me is Everyday Anti-racism: Developing Antiracist School Policy by Gillborn (2008). The author gave a compelling argument for involving students in anti-racist work.  People often think students are too young to engage in this work.  I strongly believe that when then work is presented in ways that children can understand, doors are open for powerful dialogue.  The same holds true for conversations around equity. I now know that I am not being naive for believing this.

EDU 610 Design & Leadership for Deeper Learning

What was borne from this course a powerful project that my students and I were able to experience together. It was important for them to learn not only American history, but the history of people living in and outside of America. I now know that a big idea that has not been tried before can culminate into a life changing experience for not only yourself, but also the students you teach.

Coursework Takeaways: List

This course was the most challenging because it was a culmination of all of the work we had completed in the EDU 670 and EDU 675 courses.  Starting with our plan of action, testing inquiry cycles, conducting research and writing the final paper was overwhelming at times. The focus of the three courses helped me draw on both the assigned texts and other  resources in order to produce an Improver's Guide and a Journal Article. I now know that there are several re-writes all writers experience before that have a piece that can be published.

EDU 615 Facilitating Adult Learning

The course supported my growth as a school leader.  Using the course readings, specifically the theories from the Aguilar, Kegan & Lahey and Oshry texts, I gained insight on leadership and how to cultivate and support adult learning.Through empathy interviews I learned more about the systems at my site and their efficacy.  I was able to create plans of action for improving some of the systems.

EDU 655A-F Leadership Fieldwork

I now know there must be moments as a leader to lead from the front and to lead from the back.  As a leader it is essential that you find balance and hear from stakeholders.  Many decisions will need to be made collaboratively and some will not. The school leaders who I shadowed over the past years were able to strike a delicate balance between the two.
